Cartridge World celebrates Earth Day

A market-leading retailer has marked National Earth Day by emphasising the importance of recycling ink cartridges and reducing our carbon footprint.

On a day when individuals and businesses across the UK do their bit to save the planet, Cartridge World Hartlepool celebrated Earth Day on March 20th by promoting green initiatives that also save cash for its customers every day.

Cartridge World is the UK's market-leading retailer of refilled and remanufactured printer cartridges, and aims to encourage all users to become ‘low carbon consumers'. By bringing in their empty printer cartridges to Cartridge World on 255 York Road in Hartlepool to be refilled or remanufactured, both residents and businesses can prevent them from being sent to landfill, where they can take up to 450 years to decompose.

Earth Day is celebrated across the world to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the planet's environment. The United Nations marks Earth Day each year on the vernal equinox, 20th March.

Melony Lister, of Cartridge World Hartlepool, said: "We chose this significant day to emphasise the importance of recycling ink cartridges over throwing them away, and we promoted our message by handing out leaflets and educating our customers. In that one day we refilled a magnificent 155 cartridges, so you can imagine the thousands of units that have been saved from landfill since the shop opened six years ago.

"Now is the time for local people and businesses to take action – we are encouraging everyone in Hartlepool to join us in our efforts to lessen their carbon footprint. As we all tackle the challenges of the recession, this is an alternative option that not only saves the planet but also saves cash in your pocket."

Recycling printer cartridges through refilling is significantly cheaper than purchasing manufacturers' originals. Inkjet cartridges can be refilled an average of three to eight times and remanufactured laser cartridges indefinitely, without compromising the quality of printouts. What's more, a remanufactured mono laser cartridge has a 46% lower carbon footprint than an equivalent new cartridge.

Melony adds: "Every year more than 695 million plastic printer cartridges are dumped in landfills in the UK and around the world. Every cartridge that is refilled means one fewer going into landfill and one less new cartridge that needs to be produced. Refilling cartridges also means significant savings on the CO2 and oil that are used in production, so the benefits truly are multi-faceted."
